Certified Mediation Training
This is a Mediators’ Institute of Ireland approved programme. This training includes optional assessment for accreditation with the Mediators’ Institute of Ireland. If you pass this assessment you will be entitled to apply for membership of the MII to practice as a “Certified Mediator”. The MII is the professional body for Mediators in Ireland, North and South. Their web site contains details on becoming a mediator. Their web site address is: www.themii.ie Taking part in the MII assessment process is not mandatory.
This is a generic course covering organisation and workplace disputes, civil and commercial disputes and community disputes. An adapted version of this generic course has been delivered by Gerry O'Sullivan in the University of Limerick to participants from the UL “Masters in Arts: Peace and Development Studies” programme.
This training is being offered as an open course but it can also be delivered “in-house” It may be valuable for you to offer this training to some of your key staff in managerial or supervisory positions in order that they may be skilled to address disputes within your organisation prior to these disputes becoming intractable.

Course Structure
Takes place in 3 modules comprising 3 days one week, 3 days three weeks later and 2 days after a gap of 2 weeks.
September/October 2010
Block 1 - September 9th, 10th, 11th
Block 2 - September 30th, October 1st, 2nd.
Block 3 - October 14th, 15th
Assessment dates will be 2nd and 3rd November 2010.
Trainees have an option to go forward for certified assessment for accreditation with the Mediators’ Institute of Ireland. The assessment dates will be 2nd and 3rd November 2010. Participants will be required to attend one of these dates for assessment. If participants pass this assessment they will be able to apply to the Institute for membership.
Training Location: Castlegregory, Co. Kerry
Hours in training: 56 hours in-house and 12 hours required outside of set training dates.
Course Timings: 9.00 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. (10.30 – 5.30on the first day of each Block)
Numbers on course: Maximum 6 – 8 participants
Training Costs:
Skillnet Members: €1,550.00 per person
Non Skillnet Members: €1,990.00 per person
(If requiring assessment, the additional cost to the Mediators’ Institute Assessor is €250 per participant)
Programme Trainer: Gerry O'Sullivan
Gerry O'Sullivan has 23 years experience of contract work in Conflict Resolution, Mediation, Training,
Facilitation and Evaluation both nationally and internationally. (Refer to www.osullivansolutions.ie). She is a Practitioner member of the Mediators’ Institute of Ireland. Gerry has mediated in a variety of sectors and has the additional expertise of mediating multi-party and large group disputes.
Gerry O'Sullivan is a Practitioner Mediator of the Mediators’ Institute of Ireland and is trained and certified in Organizational & Workplace Mediation, Community Mediation and in Civil & Commercial Mediation. She has a Diploma in Adult and Continuing Education from NUI Maynooth and has worked as an assessor of trainers for that body. She has delivered Training for Trainers programmes, has provided Support and Supervision for trainers and has adapted training programmes for radio presentation. Gerry delivered Mediation Training to post graduate students undertaking a “Masters of Arts in Peace and Development Studies” in the University of Limerick and she trains in mediation to Certified Mediation level assessment for the Mediators’ Institute of Ireland. She has delivered training in “Interest Based Bargaining” (Management and Union Negotiations) with John O’Dowd.
Gerry has attended training with INCORE, University of Ulster on the Evaluation and Assessment of Peace Interventions. She has assisted in the delivery of advanced Commercial Mediation training in Beograde, Serbia and assisted in the establishment of a Mediators Beyond Borders Chapter in Beograd University. Part of the work in Serbia was researching the peace building needs of Serbs living in Kosovo. Gerry has participated in training in “Inter-Community Mediation in Post Conflict Countries” with CSSP Project for Integrative Mediation in Berlin. She is contracted to work in Palestine and Israel for 3 months starting 2nd January 2010 and is invited to work in Kosovo/a with Mediators Beyond Borders in late 2010.
She is a member of the International Mediation Institute and the Irish Commercial Mediator’s Association. She is a panelist mediator with Friarylaw (ADR U.K.), Dublin and The Mediators’ Institute of Ireland for Civil & Commercial Mediations. Gerry is trained in the conduction of Investigations into Bullying & Harassment. She is on an approved panel of consultants with the Equality Authority delivering training and consultancy through Equality at the Level of Enterprise.
