Following the success of the Dublin Institute of Technology Level 7 Management Development I & II programmes delivered in 2008 & 2009 in Killarney, a third such 4 day programme – Management Development III - has been designed.
The course is certified as a Dublin Institute of Technology Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Certificate in Management Development. Under the NQAI, it will be a "short course" level 7 award and it will be worth 5 ECTS.
The programme will be tailored exactly to the needs of the participants. An example of some of the topics that could be covered is listed below.
This programme will cover 1) Management – Contemporary Issues; 2) Strategic Management; 3) Leadership and 4) Employee Recruitment, Selection and Appraisal.
In response to participant and lecturer feedback, this programme will be assessed via a single post course paper i.e. participants will submit one maximum 3000 word reflection on the application of best practices, as identified through the in class sessions, in their own work environments. There will be self assessment exercises, skill development and application exercises, as well as case study readings to better illustrate key themes. Copies of all powerpoint slides and support word documents will be distributed.
The Dublin Institute of Technology, Ireland’s second largest third level college, is recognized nationally and internationally for its close links to industry. The Faculty of Business, DIT’s Executive Development Programme partners and clients represent all key sectoral areas including Financial Services, Information and Communication Technology, Pharmacy and Health Care, International Consultancy, and the Retail Sector (including FMCG). A sample of such clients / partners include AIB, the IBOA, the Irish Insurance Federation, the Irish Stock Exchange, Intel, ICT Ireland, Hickeys Pharmacy Group, BWG, Musgrave Group, Xtra Vision and IBEC.
Further DIT works in close close partnership with national agencies including Enterprise Ireland, Fas, the National Institute of Transport & Logistics, the Irish Aviation Authority, and Skillnets. DIT is above all concerned with leading the response to the new challenges of a global, interdependent, multicultural, and technologically advanced Ireland.
With regard to this new exciting collaborative programme with DIT, it is delivered over 4 days. Each session is highly interactive with the over riding concern being reflection of best practice onto actual processes, systems and practices. In line with Skillnets philosophy, the teaching method is designed to facilitate peer learning via the sharing of experiences. Further, each module is centred around personal and organizational reflection exercises.
The programme comprises four distinct and critical management modules.
Management – Contemporary Issues:
Here rather than focusing on the typical Management topics such as planning, leading, controlling and organizing etc, this module considers contemporary developments in management practice. Areas considered will include: careers, the management of diversity, family friendly policies and work-life balance, employee participation, knowledge management and flexibility.
Strategic Management:
The focus here is on the formulation and implementation of business strategy. This is broken down into three areas: External Analysis tools and metrics including PEST Analysis and Porter’s Five Forces Framework, Internal Analysis including SWOT Analysis, and Strategy Implementation including how to best overcome resistance to change.
Leadership :
This module will begin by considering the nature and importance of leadership and then go on to identify the traits, motives and characteristics of leaders. The four most well known theories of leadership effectiveness (these theories are taught on all leadership programmes around the world from certificate through to MBA level) are then explained and considered i.e. Contingency Theory, Path Goal Theory, Situational Leadership Theory and the Vroom, Yetton Yago Decision Making Model.
Employee Recruitment, Selection & Appraisal:
The first part of this module will focus on the “human resource flow” with focus on human resource planning including on how best to forecast labour demand, employee recruitment best practice, employee selection methods, talent management and “employee exit strategies”. The second part will focus on the management and appraisal of performance including a detailed review of eight common appraisal methods.

What are ECTS credits?
ECTS credits are based on the workload students need in order to achieve expected learning outcomes. Learning outcomes describe what a learner is expected to know, understand and be able to do after successful completion of a process of learning.
They relate to level descriptors in national and European qualifications frameworks. Workload indicates the time students typically need to complete all learning activities (such as lectures, seminars, projects, practical work, self-study and examinations) required to achieve the expected learning outcomes. 60 ECTS credits are attached to the workload of a full-time year of formal learning (academic year) and the associated learning outcomes. In most cases, student workload ranges from 1 500 to 1 800 hours for an academic year, whereby one credit corresponds to 25 to 30 hours of work.
